Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition, the remaster of 1997’s Westwood-developed adventure game, is no longer coming out this year.
Initially slated to release on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2020, developer Nightdive Studios has encountered problems during “Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition’s development which have resulted in a delay.
“There have been some obstacles we’ve had to overcome in terms of the old technology the game uses,” Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick told Eurogamer. “And our hunt for the original source code and assets have come up empty.”
Blade Runner: Remastered Edition Delayed
Nightdive Studios reached out to Electronic Arts in hopes that the original Blade Runner’s publisher might have unearthed some of the game’s source code, alongside Command and Conquer’s, for its remaster.
“We’ve had some discussions with EA about what else is in the vault they found regarding Blade Runner, and we haven’t been able to get a clear answer” Kick told the website. “So we’re basically working off what was in the original game at this point and not having access to any original stuff.”
“We’re in a really difficult middle ground where we can’t really do what is typically done in a remaster,” Kick followed up. “We had to invent new pipelines to extract the data and to modify it in a way that would present it in even a slightly higher resolution or higher fidelity.”
These issues led to the indefinite delay of Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition. While we wait for a release date, the original game is available on Gog.com.
