2016 could have given us a co-op-focused Arkham-style AAA Power Rangers, provided its pitch got past Saban. Jason Bischoff, who worked for the production company at the time, took to Twitter and shared a few pieces of artwork of the title while delving into the concept behind the game.
The cancelled Power Rangers game, internally known as Project Nomad, would have been an “ambitious, open world co-op that captured the energy, teamwork, and history of the franchise through a fresh lens,” according to Bischoff. “Basically, ‘Arkham’ Rangers… or Gotham Knights 5yrs before GK’s announcement.”
The title would have seen Eltar, Zordon’s home planet, under occupation, players taking on the role of different Power Rangers from across the show’s history as they attempted to free it from invaders.
Arkham-style combat would have lent itself perfectly to the concept, knowing the show, and it’s a bit of a pity we didn’t get to see it come to fruition.
“While early talks with Devs/Publishers was (sic!) favorable, ultimately time + big shifts in our business saw conversations around Project Nomad peter out,” Bischoff wrote on Twitter. “These things totally happen! The industry is built on ‘what could have beens’,” he added.
The Twitter thread also contains several pieces of artwork depicting Ranger suit designs. Fighting game Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, which launched in 2019, did tap into the show’s history but isn’t quite the AAA offering the cancelled project could have been.
Although the franchise has had a semi-consistent stream of games released over the years – mostly on consoles –, none of them have managed to secure a spot at the top of the pile. While 2016’s project never got past pitch phase, Bischoff promised there’s “lots more to share another time,” so this might not be the last we hear of it.
