Castle Gothicstein is a mod that aims to give classic first-person shooter Return to Castle Wolfenstein an old horror movie aesthetic while bringing slight tweaks to its gameplay recipe.
Its gloomier take on the classic title is currently in development, but a demo has now been released, letting players sample its altered visuals alongside four different game modes.
Castle Gothicstein itself is based on the RealRTCW mod, which introduced high-quality textures and models, new recoil and difficulty systems, and rebalanced the base title’s weapons.
The darker visuals alone might already appeal to fans who’re into that kind of aesthetic, but it’s really the new game modes that will likely seal the deal for most.
War starts things off, retaining RealRTCW’s original feeling while providing players plenty of resources and guns that they can use.
Famine dials back the available health and ammo, while Pestilence is a mode that revolves around a new weapon called The Dagger of Warding, that’s lore-friendly, according to the developer.
Lastly, Castle Gothicstein’s Death mode “will challenge most experienced players and force them to use all their skills in combat.”
If this sounds like a take on Return to Castle Wolfenstein that you’d be interested in, you can find a demo version, which the developer also plans on using to get feedback from potential players, on both Mod DB and Steam.
