CD Projekt Red revealed today that it’s developing a remake of The Witcher “built from the ground up” using Unreal Engine 5.
Developed by Polish studio Fool’s Theory, this remake was codenamed ‘Canis Majoris’ earlier this month and is still in the early stages of development. CD Projekt will provide supervision, with veteran staff involved on the project.
We won’t hear a great deal about the project for a while, says CD Projekt, but the publisher added it feels “just as big, if not bigger,” to be remaking it for the “next-generation of gamers”.
“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger,” said Adam Badowski, Head of Studio, CD PROJEKT RED.
“Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut was the most recent remaster for the original game in the series, adding new dialogue, technical enhancements and a differentiation system for the NPC’s players would meet in the game.
We’ll keep you posted on the progress of The Witcher Remake and if there are any more updates on its development before the year is out.
