Developer Colossal Order has begun showcasing more and more gameplay footage of Cities: Skylines 2 and the sequel’s building lights appear to be a little too bright during the day, as some fans of the title have pointed out.
Looking at some of the sequel’s skyscrapers, the interior lights in some apartments are clearly visible, even with the sun supposedly high in the sky. As minor a detail as it is, small elements like these contribute to the overall immersion.
Reddit user Archibald_Tuttle was one fan who pointed out the issue in a thread that gathered 451 upvotes, describing the building lights as “odd.”
While the sentiment is shared by several other people, the replies point towards several potential causes for why Cities: Skylines 2’s lights might be brighter than would be ideal.
“It was pointed out by others that in other video’s the clock looked to show night time but it was light nonetheless,” user Static1589 wrote. “Possibly a toggle option so you can build at night time but still see what you’re doing.”
“Makes sense. With the clock actually mattering for CS2, turning the day-night cycle off should only affect the sun. Everything else needs to be functioning to get the feedback required for the player to understand their city,” user Shaggyninja replied.
Other fans disagree, saying that having lights on or off shouldn’t be conditioned by the time of day, yet, even they note that Cities: Skylines 2’s building lights are currently too bright during daytime.
“If they could have more lights on in the morning and almost none at night I feel it would look great,” user summai807 adds, offering a potential solution. “Where I live we have lights on all day so that if somebody wants to rob our house it looks like somebody is home. If CS2 is supposed to add more realism I definitely think fixing the lights would help a lot.”
Developer Colossal Order has previously confirmed that the footage we’re currently seeing is based on a beta build that doesn’t have everything properly implemented.
Whether it’s simply a case of building lights not being prioritized just yet or the day/night cycle being overridden for filming purposes, this level of brightness during the day doesn’t necessarily reflect that of Cities: Skylines 2’s full version, which is slated to release later this year.
Nevertheless, the city builder’s community is making sure to comb through every little detail of the released footage ahead of launch, and pointing out small issues like these can help put them on the developer’s radar. We’ve reached out to Paradox Interactive for comment and will update if we hear anything back.
