Commandos: Origins’ release date marks the much-awaited return of the acclaimed World War 2 real-time tactics series, exploring the early days of the elite strike force many older gamers remember fondly.
Published by Kalypso Media and developed by Claymore Game Studios, the title promises to test our tactical prowess and ability to masterfully avoid vision cones in various challenging scenarios set across authentic WWII environments. Read on below for everything we know about Commandos: Origins, including details about its release date, gameplay, and more.
Commandos: Origins Release Date
Commandos: Origins will be released on April 9, 2025, for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
Commandos: Origins was originally due to be released in 2024, but it was pushed back to March 2025. Now, it’s been set in stone for an April release.
“The Green Beret couldn’t have said it better with his iconic phrase ‘Consider it done,’” said Jürgen Reusswig, Studio Director at Claymore Game Studios. “After more than four years of setting up a new studio, design and development and the invaluable community feedback from various playtests, operation ‘Release’ is a go for Commandos: Origins. We are proud and excited that players will now be able to experience the origins story of the elite unit which started this legendary franchise.”
Commandos: Origins Story
Although Commandos: Origins is also set during World War 2, just like its predecessors, it explores the early days of the infamous unit.
Its missions are no less dangerous, we’ll see how Jack O’Hara and his five companions met, forming a group that would take on exceptionally challenging assignments to help the Allied war effort.
Commandos: Origins Gameplay
In terms of gameplay, Commandos: Origins looks poised not just to offer a blast from the past for series veterans but also to show newcomers why older gamers grew attached to its daring crew.
The title uses the same isometric perspective the subgenre is known for, allowing us to control six characters, each with a distinct set of tools and abilities.
Its 10+ missions see us undertaking daring raids, covert sabotage, and rescue missions in locations such as the Arctic and the deserts of Africa alongside Europe’s Western and Eastern fronts.
Stealth and deception play an important role in most missions, as we will likely navigate hostile environments controlled by an enemy force that easily outnumbers us.
Sneaking past guards unseen, climbing to avoid patrols, and driving vehicles are only a few of the elements that can affect how we approach each mission.
Teamwork is just as important, and learning the synergies between different characters’ abilities can make our job considerably more manageable.
Commandos: Origins promises a “modern user experience with precise and intuitive controls enables you to control the commandos with expert precision” alongside a 2-player cooperative multiplayer mode available both online or via local split-screen.
Commandos: Origins Characters
Commandos: Origins doesn’t bring back all of the playable characters from across the series, at least judging by the initial batch of shared details, but the six confirmed so far should make up for a deadly enough team:
- Jack O’Hara** “the Green Beret”
- Thomas “the Sapper” Hancock
- Francis T. “he Sniper” Woolridge
- Samuel “the Driver” Brooklyn
- James “the Marine” Blackwood
- Rene “the Spy” Duchamp
