Paradox has revealed that Crusader Kings 3’s Patch 1.5 will introduce a coat of arms designer to the grand strategy game, giving players the opportunity to customize their realm’s heraldry.
Detailed in today’s dev diary 71, CK3’s coat of arms designer will launch with options to start customizing one from scratch or adjust an existing coat of arms. The former offers the most freedom while altering a historical coat of arms is likely quicker but comes with a number of limitations.
“The reason adjusted mode is separate is that some historical coat of arms are made up of a lot of emblems in an order that whilst looks pretty in game is rather cursed if you were to try and see the full layout and background usage,” the developer explains.
CK3’s coat of arms designer features three panels, the first of which lets you pick from a selection of background patterns and determine your heraldry’s color using either pre-defined choices or a color picker. When you’re adjusting a coat of arms, you won’t be able to change its background pattern.
The coat designer’s layouts panel “dictate the overall amount and positioning of the emblems in your coat of arms” and will not be usable in adjusted mode.
Lastly, the emblem panel gives you access to more than a thousand emblem textures which you can color as you see fit. You’ll be able to add multiple emblems to your coat of arms, and the interface is built to allow easy bulk editing.
“We also have a detailed edit mode which lets you go deeper and modify the exact positions, scale, and rotation of all your emblems as well as modify what layer they are on and even add and remove them to your heart’s content!”
Undo/redo options support incremental changes, while Cadet branches can choose to have their coat of arms’ quartering removed.
You will be also able to preview your coat of arms as you customize it and also share it with other players once you’ve decided it doesn’t need any further changes.
Crusader Kings 3’s Patch 1.5 does not currently have a release date but will accompany the Royal Court expansion, which is expected to release before the end of 2021.
