Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court brings back artifacts that your rulers can obtain through various methods as long as they don’t get stabbed in the back or drink themselves to death five days into their rule. One such method, Inspirations, happens to be the subject of today’s developer diary 68, which sheds more light on how they work.
When Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court launches, you’ll start noticing landless characters across the world having different types of Inspirations. These manifest as desires “to create something extraordinary,” whether that be writing a book, weaving a tapestry, or forging a crown fit for the strongest rulers. Inspirations can target particular items, such as daggers, but you’ll also find characters that simply know they want to craft a weapon.
The reasoning behind Inspirations only triggering for landless characters comes from Paradox wanting “to extend the immersion of guests and courtiers by making them valuable to you even if you have no desire to push their claims, or use their skills as a councillor,” developer diary 68 explains.
Characters struck by Inspiration lack the coin to craft their would-be magnum opus, which is why they’ll travel across the world in search of a ruler that’s benevolent enough to sponsor their efforts. Realms that have a higher amount of Grandeur will not only attract Inspired people more often, but also have “a higher chance at receiving skilled craftsmen that will be able to forge an artifact to meet your expectations.”
Skilled characters will, naturally, demand more gold but the artifacts they craft tend to also be better. Which of their skills plays the highest role depends on what artifact they want to make. Martial and Prowess influence the quality of weapons, while Learning helps if they want to write a book.
“After funding an inspiration, it will take some time for the character to create the artifact. During the creation progress various situations can happen, such as the character asking for better materials to work with,” the developer explains. Answering positively to their requests (and paying the extra coin) naturally increases the chances of getting a better artifact.
Much like Schemes, Inspirations gain progress “depending on a chance each month, making the actual time it takes to complete vary.” Once the progress bar is full, you can see whether or not all the coin you spent paid off.
Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court also lets you obtain artifacts through different means, such as events, but Inspirations “exist to serve as the most significant means of doing so, since they will generally grant you artifacts of a higher quality.”
There’s no word yet on when CK3’s first major expansion will launch, but it and its accompanying update sound rather chock-full with features and changes, including a series of India map tweaks and the ability to choose the color of newly created cultures, faiths, and titles.
