Publisher Slitherine and developer Code Force have shared more details about upcoming 4X strategy game Distant Worlds 2, revealing in its second developer diary that it will feature more story content than its predecessor.
Each of the seven playable factions in Distant Worlds 2 – Humans, Ackdarians, Mortalen, Haakonish, Zenox, Boskara, and Teekan – will be given expanded main and faction stories built around their respective playstyles and role in the lore.
“This is a major effort above and beyond anything that Distant Worlds: Universe had, involving the creation of a new story and event system which allows us to do much more than we could in the past, including event and story choices (and this is all also open to players and modders who wish to tinker and use the system for their own stories),” developer diary 2 reads.
“Each Faction in Distant Worlds 2 by default represents a certain playstyle. For example, the Mortalen are ‘Disciplined Warriors’ which means that their faction story and faction victory conditions will tend to reinforce that playstyle and reward playing them in that way. “
Their main story “will reveal some information about the Ancient galaxy and what happened in the past,” while the faction story focuses on those events that involved the faction itself all while taking players to “unique and rewarding locations.”
Although the developer has put more resources into the narrative side of things, both the main and faction stories can be disabled during galaxy setup, alongside a host of other features. As the team puts it, the goal is to “let you play the game your way.”
Aside from tackling Distant Worlds 2’s story content, developer diary 2 also sheds more light on the dangers that await across its galaxy, from good old pirates to deadly space creatures.
Distant Worlds 2 does not yet have a release date, but you can follow it on Steam and watch its newest trailer, highlighting the Mortalen, below.
