Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the highly-anticipated sequel in Capcom’s fantasy action-RPG series that blends intense combat and relaxing exploration with a unique Pawn system. Coming more than a decade after the original, its release date is something that would-be and returning monster hunters are very keen to know more about.
The RPG was present during Sony’s PlayStation showcase from May 2023, when we got our first look at actual gameplay. Aside from showing that development is progressing well, it also kicked up a hornet’s next of eager fans wanting to learn specific details about the game. Here is everything we know about Dragon’s Dogma 2, including details about its release date, story, gameplay, and more.
Dragon's Dogma 2 Release Date
Dragon’s Dogma 2 wasn’t yet given a release date, which suggests that we may have to wait a while before we’ll actually get to slay legendary monsters ourselves.
Our guess is that there are slim chances to see it launching in 2023, but we won’t know for sure until Capcom shares official details.
In November 2023, a leak pointed towards a March 2024 release date for Dragon’s Dogma 2.
On the same day, Capcom announced a showcase was scheduled for the end of the month, focusing on gameplay and other details regarding the RPG.
Hours before the November 28, 2023 livestream during which Dragon’s Dogma 2’s release date was meant to be officially revealed, the game’s Steam page appears to have leaked it by accident, revealing that the title is headed our way on March 22, 2024.
Dragon's Dogma 2 Story
Dragon’s Dogma 2 story hasn’t been extensively detailed so far, but what has been share paints a picture that’ll be familiar to anyone who’s played the original.
We take on the role of the Arisen, a capable warrior whose heart was stolen by the dragon, which symbolizes the world’s destruction.
Our quest? Making sure there’s one big flame-spewing less lizard threatening the world.
Dragon's Dogma 2 Gameplay
Developed using the RE Engine, Dragon’s Dogma 2’s gameplay builds upon the original’s foundations, which helped set it apart from other action-RPGs.
Stepping into the role of Arisen, we’ll be able to customize their appearance, vocation (class), as well as choose the composition of our party.
The four starting vocations – Fighter, Mage, Thief, and Archer – each have their own abilities and playstyle. We will be able to change vocations at any time by visiting Vocation Guilds.
The Fighter wields a one-handed sword and shield, preferring to engage foes in melee combat. Archers use the bow and arrow to fight from a distance, excelling at taking down flying enemies like harpies.
Mages can dish out damage with long-range magical attacks but also use healing and support spells to keep their party in the fight.
The nimble Thief employs sharp dual daggers to quickly strike opponents, while also being able to exploit openings and cling onto opponents, dealing damage in the process.
After progressing enough through the story, advanced vocations like the Mystic Spearhand or the Magick Archer can be unlocked.
The former combines melee and magical attacks, acting as an all-rounder that can fight both up close and at range.
The latter keeps their distance, employing ranged attacks with magical arrows while being able to provide healing and support to allies.
Pawns are set to make a return as AI-controlled companions that help us on our journey. We’ll be able to create and customize a main pawn as well as borrow up to two other support pawns from other players.
They can not only help in combat but also act as guides through new locations. In addition, NPCs will also occasionally join us on your adventures.
We’ll get to explore an open world that’s “roughly four times the size” of that from the original game, populated by humans and beastren, the latter being a race new to the sequel.
On our journey, we’ll encounter and face a variety of legendary monsters like griffins and the newly-introduced Medusa. Just like in the original, both the Arisen and party members can scale or latch onto bigger monsters, targeting specific body parts.
The RE Engine allows us to shatter bridges and bring larger foes down by attacking their legs.
Darkness also seems to play a role in gameplay, making it much harder to see at night, encouraging the use of various light sources, magical or otherwise.
On top of that, some monsters also only appear at night. Carrying a camping kit allows us to sleep until sunrise, recovering our health in the process.
In addition, ox carts act as a means of fast travel. However, while they’ll often quickly take us to distant locations, they can also come during attack by opportunistic monsters.
Where can I buy Dragon's Dogma 2 and how much does it cost?
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is set to launch on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. It hasn’t been given a price yet, but we do know its headed to Steam, while its console versions should be available through their respective storefronts.
