Dying Light 2 has no shortage of enemies that you’ll inevitably trade blows with when not parkouring across Villedor. Although the game is quite generous with the number or weapons it gives you, knowing how the different types of humans and zombies fight gives you a much needed advantage when you unexpectedly find yourself in the thick of battle.
At a glance, it’s easy to label Dying Light 2 as a zombie game. But although you’ll fight your fair share of infected during your time in Villedor, you’ll also send plenty of more or less deranged humans to the afterlife.
Dying Light 2 Human Enemy Types
Dying Light 2’s human enemies might belong to different factions but you generally have to worry about only a few types, regardless of the colors they wear.
Most of them will be of the same size as Aiden. Some wield melee weapons while throwing the occasional knife your way, others prefer fighting with a bow, while a few enjoy spewing flames at you.
They’ll sometimes be accompanied by bulkier human opponents that are slower but can take more damage before falling to your blows. These big boys also tend to walk around carrying bigger sticks, which you’ll want to avoid.
Dying Light 2 gives you quite a bit of freedom when it comes to killing its human enemies. You can employ many of Aiden’s different tools to take them out, although there are a few general tactics you should keep in mind.
Mastering perfect dodges and blocks means you can stagger opponents more often, letting you use them as ramps to launch into acrobatic kicks that can seriously help when you’re greatly outnumbered.
You’ll also want to avoid using the same attack too many times in a row, as human enemies will begin dodging it. Lastly, do not underestimate the power of the slide/head stomp combo once you unlock the two skills, as it’s deceptively powerful.
The same can be said about the bow. Sometimes, enemies will slowly walk around giving you enough time to perfect those headshot skills of yours.
Even if you don’t have that big a window of time to finish them off, hitting a few shots means you have less health to worry about.
Dying Light 2 Zombie Enemy Types
Dying Light 2’s zombie enemy types are more numerous than their human counterparts but generally lack the ability to read repeated attacks as well.
This means you can smash your way through them with some good old button-mashing, however, you’ll need to be more careful about your positioning and stamina management, since the horde can easily surround you.
Naturally, gadgets like molotovs or weapon mods can make your life easier against the infected. Here is a breakdown of the zombies we encountered thus far in Dying Light 2.
- Biter/Viral - Regular infected humans. Easy to fight alone, dangerous when in large groups. Often accompany bigger zombies. The wider swings of two-handed weapons or a well-placed Molotov can make your life easier against them.
- Rampage - Zombies equipped with an impenetrable shell in the front that use charge attacks to knock you off your feet. Lure into walls to temporarily render them vulnerable.
- Demolisher - Hulking zombies that, while slow, often come equipped with wrecking balls or other weapons that extend their range. Look for line and whirlwind attacks that can, nonetheless damage the regular infected that often accompany them. If your dodge game isn't all that good, they're not that great at climbing, so find higher ground and let that bow sing.
- Revenant - Found inside GRE Anomaly areas. Slender and equipped with sharp limbs protruding from their backs, they can leap across long distances and attack you from afar. Close in the distance as quickly as possible and hack away.
- Howler - Compensate for their weak nature by acting as a living alarm at night. If they spot you, they call nearby infected to your location, initiating Dying Light 2's chases.
- Bolter - Frail but fast, catching these Dying Light 2 zombies is the objectives of one of its encounter types you can partake in at night.
- Volatile - The meanest type of infected around, these are fast and deal enough damage to make sneaking past or running from them the most viable options. At the same time, I only faced them a few times during the main quest.
It’s possible that there may be other types of zombie enemy types hiding in the darker corners of Dying Light 2’s Villedor. If you spot them first, let us know in the comments.
