Europa Universalis 4’s vcruntime140_1.dll missing error has kept popping up since launch, making the game unplayable after you download a new update. It’s frustrating to not be able to continue your quest towards painting the map in your country’s color but, thankfully, there are two known fixes that seem to reliably get rid of the issue.
Europa Universalis 4’s vcruntime140_1.dll missing error has emerged most recently as the game became free to redeem for a week on the Epic Games Store. The release of its new version required downloading a small update which left some players unable to launch the game.
The most common fix for EUIV’s vcruntime140_1.dll missing error involves reinstalling the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, which you’ll find on the company’s website for operating systems using both x86 and x64 architectures.
That alone should be enough to fix Europa Universalis IV’s vcruntime140_1.dll missing error but, if it doesn’t work, Steam user manu1265 posted a reply they claim to have received from Paradox customer service, suggesting the following additional steps:
- Move any valued save games elsewhere
- "Uninstall" in Steam-EU4
- Manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/EU4 folders
- Re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- Add EU4.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- Start the game with no mods active and test
The reply also notes that applications like RivaTuner, RadeonPro, a gaming VPN app called Evolve, the MSI Gaming App, or Duet, clash with EUIV and you should consider disabling them before starting the game.
If you’re playing the game’s Steam version, you also have the option of reverting to a previous build from the Betas tab of the Properties menu, although that may not always be ideal.
These steps will, hopefully, fix Europa Universalis IV’s vcruntime140_1.dll missing error and see you back into the grand strategy game, regardless if you’re on Steam or the Epic Games Store.
