Fortnite may have been getting slightly overshadowed by the runaway success of Apex Legends as of late, but that doesn't mean it's going anywhere just yet. In fact, the developers, Epic Games, seem quite eager to take on what works for Apex, too!
Fortnite Ping system is the latest new feature that's made it to the game, and it is practically a direct copy of Apex Legends' rather revolutionary contextual ping feature. The caveat is, however, that Fortnite's characters don't talk.
While pinging items in Apex Legends has your character straight-up talk about what's been pinged, with the game even modifying single utterances to combine them in a sensible sentence, should you be pinging more than one item, object, or enemy at a time, Fortnite has opted for a far simpler solution.
Of course, the reasoning behind this is obvious - doing brand new voice-work for each of Fortnite's huge roster of skins and characters would be time-consuming and financially questionable at best, making Epic's smash hit drag after its primary competitor in this regard.
The compromise is that pinging in Fortnite produces a highly-specific sound, which gives you a vague idea of what's being pointed out instead of outright telling you what it is. In other words - not quite as good as what we've got in Apex, but fair.
