Paradox has announced that Foundry, its procedurally generated voxel factory-building and automation sandbox simulation game, is now out in early access on Steam.
You might have tried Foundry in October when a demo was released. According to developer Channel 3 Entertainment, 100,000 players downloaded the alpha demo.
Foundry will go up against the likes of Factorio and Satisfactory
Paradox loves to work with developers who create games that aim to keep you up until the early hours of the morning, facing off extraterrestrial threats in space, controlling a dynasty across generations of history, and now plotting out a procedurally generated voxel factory in Foundry.
Players begin by manually mining and processing resources, crafting machinery to improve efficiency, and eventually developing new technologies to automate the entire production line.
On paper, managing pipe and belt networks might seem dull, but the logistical challenges and complex power systems, coupled with the drive to expand production lines, can provide surprisingly satisfying moments of relaxation. This is particularly true when teaming up with 2-4 players post-work with friends or family.
Factorio and Satisfactory are the genre benchmarks, so it will be interesting to see how Foundry fares as it heads along its early access development. Mindustry and Dyson Sphere Program are recommended if you want a building sim with a bit more strategy combat.
