Greedfall is the latest RPG from The Technomancer creators Spiders, and it's a big Colonial fantasy game with a lot of choice and consequence - such as to various reputations. One of the earliest missions in the game is a good example of how things can go, the Greedfall Coin Guard Merchandise quest.
Coin Guard Merchandise is a side quest you pick up early in the opening city of Selene, and there are many ways it can go. We'll show you how to get through the quest completely non-violently, without killing anyone. Honestly, this time...
How to beat the Greedfall Coin Guard Merchandise non-violently
You'll get the Coin Guard Merchandise quest very early, in fact you'll be handed it as part of a cutscene. Head to the shady vendor in question (he's right in the centre of the map), and if you've got Charisma or Intuition points you can easily win him over - otherwise, you'll have to threaten him to get him to deliver the merchandise. But that's the easy part of the mission.
Head to the Coin Guard Barracks and the quartermaster there will tell you the next problem - they can't actually load the merchandise you just threatened the vendor about, at least without smuggling it on illegally, and you don't want that. Have a chat with Captain Vasco, who can't let the shipment on - but you'll get a few options out of it.
Just to the east of Vasco is an area controlled by the Nauts, the sailor class of Selene. You can wander about, but don't head into the buildings or you'll get into a fight. There are guards in front of the warehouse you need to put the merchandise into (furthest east point), and the Harbour Master's office is also guarded, and to the right. You have multiple options now on how to proceed.
- Kill the guards.
- Drug the guards.
- Impersonate a Naut and win the guards' confidence.
- Tamper with the ship's log in the Harbour Master's office.</b>
</ul>
Obviously you don't want to kill the guards, even though it's the easiest route, as your standing with the Nauts will decrease. You'll want to do one of the others, but you'll have to be careful with all bar one - drugging the guards. Head to the Merchant (he's on the map) and buy a Sleeping Potion and a Bottle of Brandy, then head to the workbench just outside the Tavern. If you have a Science level 1 ability you can make a Laced Drink and serve it to the guards to knock them out - if you don't have Science, you'll have to do something else.
How to get the Greedfall Naut uniform
No matter what, if you haven't got Science level 1 you'll have to head into the building with the Harbour Master's office - and be careful, make sure you're sneaking at all times. Head in the back entrance, but there's a guard wandering immediately inside, so be prepared to dodge outside again. Sneak past them and up the stairs, but be aware of another guard in the area at the top of the stairs. Dodge around to the left and through the door furthest left.
To impersonate a Naut you'll need the Sailor outfit - and you can find all parts of it in a chest to the left, as you enter this room. You can now, if you wish, carefully head out the way you came and give the guards the night off. You may as well carry on to the next room, the Harbour Master's office, and change the ship's log too - there are no guards, but keep crouching.
Carefully head back out, dressed in the Sailor outfit, and talk to the guards as mentioned. Now you can tell the porters to load up the merchandise, and head back to the Coin Guard barracks to tell the quartermaster the good news. There's actually a bug here which turns off the map waypoint for this quest - the barracks are located in the picture below, if you'd forgotten.
Greedfall Coin Guard Merchandise - Where to find the crates in New Selene
The next part of the quest doesn't occur until you get to Teer Fradee. Check in with Quartermaster Manfred and you'll discover that your subterfuge in Selene didn't go down well, and the merchandise has been seized. The Quartermaster has his men ready to reclaim them - but first they have to find where they are.
There will be several possibilities marked on your map - the correct one is Warehouse A, the furthest one. Of course, you could wade in there, killing all the guards - and giving yourself a big knock to your reputation with the Nauts - or you could sneak in. Just next to Warehouse B, in the alley by Admiral Cabral, there is a fence you can climb over. Do so, then crouch to start sneaking.
There are three guards in this area. Again, you can murder them all, or you can be sneaky. Two guards don't move and have their backs to you - sneak up to them and do a sneak attack when you get the prompt, just watch out for the one walking around - they're on a set path so they're easy to avoid. Head into Warehouse A - don't worry, there are no guards inside - and look for the crates you need, then mark them.
Sneak out the same way, being careful to avoid that one guard. Head back to the Quartermaster to get your reward. Congratulations, you've (hopefully) not killed anyone and completed the Greedfall Coin Guard Merchandise quest!
