Dune Awakening is one of the most anticipated MMOs on the horizon. Although it’s set to release next year, hands-on tests have already given us a good idea of what to expect. A key question for an MMO of this scale is how many players can join a server, with larger capacities allowing you to collaborate with a huge group of people.
Here is how many players can play on a server and what you can expect from that experience.
How many players are in a Dune Awakening server?
Dune Awakening can have up to several hundred players in one location. The numbers vary depending on where you are in the world. In an interview with Visit Arrakis, the creative director of Dune Awakening, Joel Bylos, said that the deep desert map area can have “many hundreds of players”. But, social hubs are limited to 100 players and smaller survival spaces are limited to “40 at the moment”.
He did go on to say that “we’ll see how we optimize”, which could mean these numbers may change down the line either restricting capacity in each area more or boosting it.
This means that the experience sticks closer to the MMO formula than a traditional online survival game, which usually has only a handful of players on a server. If you are familiar with Funcom’s games then this will be no surprise as Conan Exiles opts for a similar high player number in servers, although Dune Awakening is going above and beyond that by several times.
We’ve yet to know how this server-side may or may not change depending on the platform you play on. With the game coming to both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the server numbers could be restricted on crossplay servers or console-only servers, but we won’t know for sure until we get more details on the console versions.
