Announced during E3 2019 and launching later in 2020, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga aims to put an end to the series’ hiatus of almost four years. A recent interview with developer TT Games and Lucasfilms Games has shed some more light on the title, revealing that it will feature “nearly 500 characters”.
On top of that, all of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’s levels were built from the ground up, making the project a rather massive undertaking that aims to encompass the decade-long journey depicted by the films.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Features Nearly 500 Characters
“There are nearly 500 characters in this game, with many of them playable. When choosing characters for a game this large, we just looked at every film in the saga and tried to say “yes” as much as possible.”, Lucasfilm Games Managing Producer Craig Derrick told StarWars.com.
“That said, it often comes down to storytelling and the specific role of the character in the quests and game progression. Of course, we have almost all of your favorite heroes and villains from the films, many background players, a few surprises, and…Yaddle!”, he continued.
The same interview revealed LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’s key art, which shows a couple more characters that players will see in the title.
Thus, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga players will encounter – and, we expect, be able to play as – Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi R2-D2, C-3PO, various droids from the Confederacy military as well as Clone troopers prequels-wise.
Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Rebellion Troopers and Imperial Stormtroopers, including their cold assault variants, make up part of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’s characters from the original trilogy.
Lastly, when it comes to the most recent films, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will feature the likes of Kylo Ren, Rey Skywalker, Finn, BB-8, Chewbacca.
Naturally, this doesn’t even come close to the almost 500 planned characters, but already shows there’s a strong roster in TT Games’ upcoming title.
In regards to LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’s scope and levels, TT Games Strategic Director Jonathan Smith called the title a “LEGO landmark”.
Derrick then continued by saying: “We needed the game to feel epic in scope and scale while bringing the player intimately closer to the action like never before. This required new technology, new game mechanics, and a passionate team of developers to create a cast of hundreds and all the familiar worlds they populate — all with the charm and humor you expect with a LEGO Star Wars game. Quite frankly, this game is massive because it had to be.”
As an additional treat to fans, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will let players start the story from whichever point they want, Smith saying that freedom of choice is “a really important principle” for the folks over at TT Games.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is due out later this year on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
