Master of Magic is a name that resonates with any seasoned 4X strategy fan. If you’ve not played the classic game, you’re very likely to have heard about it and the influence it’s had on the subgenre. You’re also likely curious about the release date of its Slitherine-published reboot.
The Master of Magic reboot was revealed in 2021 promising a game that’s “extremely faithful” to the original, changing as few elements as possible and only where it makes sense. Having a go at a modernized version of this classic is bound to offer a welcome dose of nostalgia and we’ve gathered in this article everything we know about the reboot, including details about its release date, gameplay, and more.
Master of Magic Release Date
The Master of Magic reboot’s release date is currently expected to occur before the end of 2022. As of May, it has entered beta. We’re keeping our fingers crossed there won’t be any delays.
Master of Magic Story
The Master of Magic reboot is set in the realms of Arcanus and Myrror, which players can explore to discover a variety of fantasy races to recruit and battle.
The former resembles our world, to some extent, while the latter leans more heavily into magical elements. They’re linked by portals, so you will be able to visit both during a playthrough.
Akin to other 4X strategy games, you build your own narrative as you conquer settlements, fight battles, engage in diplomacy, research spells, and ultimately claim victory or lose to your rivals. If you’re looking for a story-driven experience, this isn’t quite that.
Master of Magic Gameplay
Master of Magic’s reboot should feel rather familiar to anyone who’s played the original. At the start of a match, you get to pick one of 14 playable wizards.
Each one has their own personality, which is reflected in gameplay, as well as different lores of magic that they specialize in.
You’ll also be able to play as a custom wizard, assigning points into traits and magic instead of picking one of the pre-made characters.
Afterwards, you pick one of nine playable races, which determine the units you’ll control at the start of the game, and set off on your path of conquest.
As you expand your influence by befriending and taking over towns, your unit pool increases both in size and variety. You’ll also need to manage the towns that you take over as well as build new ones using settlers.
You’ll encounter races such as elves, dragons, dwarves, orcs, and get to collect or craft some 250 unique magical items.
Spells are a central element of the Master of Magic reboot’s gameplay and you’ll use and feel the effects of more than 200 of them as you play.
Your pool won’t be as impressive at first. However, as the game goes on, you get to research more spells to add to your spellbook. Once unlocked, you can cast them both in battle and on the world map.
Eliminating other wizards is one path to victory, but managing to research and cast one particularly powerful spell also provides an alternative approach to becoming Master of Magic.
The one big difference in the reboot is how title its map is split into hexes, rather than the original’s squares, because “they made more sense in terms of gameplay,” according to the developer.
