Peter Molyneux’s return to game design was a highlight at Gamescom Opening Night Live, where the legendary designer took the stage to formally announce his next project: Masters of Albion.
Masters of Albion is an open-world strategy god game that takes elements from Molyneux’s iconic titles from the 90s and 00s, such as Dungeon Keeper, Black and White, and Fable. The game is currently under development by former Fable developers and Mark Healey, the former head of Media Molecule. 22cans has been listed as the developer.
“Gifted god-like, ancient powers, you face an enemy the likes of which have not been seen in hundreds of years,” reads a description on Steam.
“Magic is returning to the hills and halls of Albion, threatening to tear down the very foundations of society. Unravel the mystery of the mages, defeat the enemy that lurks in the night, and conquer a sorcery that could kill us all.”
The project is self-funded by Molyneux, but the team is looking for a publisher. In Molyneux’s own words, “I need to come home” to PC gaming and consoles. His studio, 22cans, has focused on developing mobile games for the past decade.
“After messing around on mobile, what the hell was I doing? I thought to myself,” said Molyneux on stage during the Gamescom Opening Night Live event.
“So I looked at Dungeon Keeper… I’ve taken things from Black & White, I’ve done the same with Fable, and this is what I’m showing tonight.”
Masters of Albion Release Date
Masters of Albion doesn’t have a release date yet, but we expect to see it released in some form of early access by 2025. It’s being developed for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
It looks like a playable build is being shown to the press and the public at Gamescom, and the game’s system requirements have been set, so it shouldn’t be too long before we see more from Masters of Albion.

Masters of Albion Gameplay
In Masters of Albion, you can design and manufacture products for the people of Oakridge, and fulfill order requests from outside towns to earn money to spend on your infrastructure and defenses. You colonise and expand in the day, but by night, you must defend against waves of merciless creatures (zombies, werewolves, trolls, and spiders).
You can defend your town by arming turrets with fantastical ammo that you’ve designed, Hire heroes to fight for you, and control them in third person using the procession spell, much like you would the minions in Dungeon Keeper.
Discover and upgrade powerful Godhand powers - similar to what we’ve seen in Black and White - including lightning, flamethrowers, water cannons, and more.
You can see some of the features from Black and White and Dungeon Keeper in Masters of Albion, but it reminded us of an old long lost Crystal Dynamics game called The Horde, where you would spend most of your day building up your livestock and farm, only to defend it at night from the hungry red monsters known as Hordlings. Perhaps a bit of Majesty too.
You can find Masters of Albion on Steam.
