As part of Nacon Connect 2025, a new first-person horror thriller based on the Cthulhu Mythos has been announced. Enter Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, from Big Bad Wolf, the Bordeaux-based studio behind Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong.
The just-revealed game is being described as “a thrilling investigative adventure inspired by Lovecraft’s universe,” suggesting there will be a bigger focus on puzzles and psychological horror, which could separate it from other titles with a similar setting. The CG trailer, which you can watch below, introduces Noah, “an agent of Ancile, a secret Interpol division specializing in occult cases, as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of miners in the depths of the Pacific Ocean.” He’ll be joined by an AI agent named Key while trying to resist the “mind-corrupting influence of Cthulhu.”
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is due to be released in 2026
In this reveal trailer, Noah is already having a pretty bad time, going from a surprisingly modern room to a creepy swamp with a suspicious-looking house to an underground abyss where the mythical city of R’lyeh lies dormant. Also, the big guy is there, looking as scary as ever. How does this all tie together? It seems we’ll have to wait for a second wave of marketing.
This first look at the world Big Bad Wolf has been crafting for the past few years already feels quite different from other gaming efforts centred on the famous fictional universe created by H.P. Lovecraft, mainly because the setting seems to be slightly futuristic rather than anchored in the past. We’ve yet to see gameplay and receive more details on the plot and other narrative elements holding the experience together, but colour us intrigued for now.
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is currently set to release in 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. We’re expecting to learn more about it in the coming months.
