As the RTS genre nears the edge of potentially making a huge comeback through new indie and AA releases like Godsworn and Stormgate, we’re now looking further into its future. From Slipgate Ironworks and 2B Games comes Tempest Rising, a game which is proudly wearing lots of Command & Conquer influences on its sleeve.
Tempest Rising seems to be a nostalgic return to RTS games that paid as much attention to base-building and resource-collecting as they cared about real-time battles. “Inspired by RTS greats of the 90s and 2000s, Tempest Rising is a classic, base-building real-time strategy game set in a modern-day alternative history war scenario,” the description on the Steam page reads.
Armies can be customized ahead of each mission in the story campaign, which features two sides of the global conflict and high-quality cutscenes. At least a third faction is set to arrive after launch, and of course, skirmishes, custom games, and ranked multiplayer as straight-to-the-point as you remember are available. As it stands, it appears the game will be a regular premium release, but the final price tag is being kept under wraps too.
The game was originally slated to release in 2023, but as we enter the second half of 2024, not even a launch later this year seems locked now. However, looking at the tighter schedules that many small and mid-sized games are handling nowadays in regards to marketing and building hype up, there’s still a good chance it could hit sooner rather than later. We’ll be keeping tabs on it for sure.
The new demo includes two missions, one for each faction: GDF and Dynasty. Publisher 3D Realms, now part of Saber Interactive, and the two studios also want players to share their feedback after playing through the demo with a survey, so you know what to do if you’ve been itching for a modern successor to the Command & Conquer series and have some free time this weekend.
