It’s fair to say Starry Studios’ Once Human has been a bit of a free-to-play hit this summer, which is no easy feat considering how competitive that space, especially within the open-world MMO survival subgenre, is right now.
Once Human’s vision of the apocalypse is full of mutants, cosmic horrors, and all kinds of extremely strange in-game events. Below the off-beat surface, there’s a fairly familiar survival game that’s got everything you’ve come to expect from the genre, but we can safely say that most players are giving Once Human a fair shake because of how openly weird its world is and all the customization and building tools it offers.
Once Human Season 1 Release Date
After launching outside of beta on July 9, 2024, on Steam and receiving several urgent patches, players have slowly begun to learn about the deeper systems of Once Human and what its seasonal model entails. Long story short: Starry Studios has chosen to shake things up and reject the done-to-death seasons that are seen almost everywhere these days. Instead, seasons are called ‘scenarios’ and last six weeks before rotating out and paving the way for the next one.
That means you’ve got six weeks (in a regular season, as some of the new ones might be shorter) on average to finish the current battle pass and/or enjoy what the current world state has to offer before the server rotates into a new one.
According to Starry Studios, each scenario/season is “packed with unique mechanics, environments, and content.” This will affect both PvE and PvP content, and as we move into the game’s future, all-new scenarios will be at the center of Once Human’s offerings. Moreover, some scenarios will become permanent.
This means the current scenario in each server should end around August 20, and that comes with a server wipe that affects every character. Don’t fret, however, as the devs have underlined that currency, gear blueprints, furniture formulas, cosmetics, house blueprints, friend lists, and story progress will be retained. Resources are only partially carried over to level the playing field. Characters will reset to level 1. World map exploration is cleared too, which makes sense when you consider the changes it might receive constantly.
While this is bound to be divisive, Once Human’s commitment to keeping things in movement and fresh, coupled with a seasonal model that isn’t trying to replicate what every other major online game is doing, could help it retain a healthy and loyal player base in the long run. We’ll have to wait to see whether these bold decisions pay off though.
