Aside from mixing RPG and survival elements, Nine Dots Studio’s Outward also has a penchant for making the use of some of its items not immediately clear. This is the case with the Outward Strange Rusted Sword, which players were suspecting to be more than just a simple rusty blade.

The Outward Strange Rusted Sword waits at the top of the Conflux Mountain in Cierzo. You’ll find it stuck in a stone next to the Rock Mantis you’ll most likely have to beat prior to taking the item. Luckily, there’s no special requirements for obtaining the sword which is done by simply walking up to it and clicking the interact button when you see the prompt.
As its name and description suggest, there’s more than meets the eye to the Outward Strange Rusted Sword. In fact, it’s one of four components required for the recipe to craft the unique one-handed sword Brand. The other three ingredients, discovered by Reddit user Just2good877 are as follows: a Chemist’s Broken Flask, sold in the Levant Alchemist Shop for 700s, a Mage’s Poking Stick, sold in the Monsoon Alchemist Shop for 375s and a Blacksmith’s Vintage Hammer, sold in the Berg Blacksmith Shop for 300s.
Using the Outward Strange Rusted Sword alongside the three ingredients above to craft Brand will give you a one-handed sword that inflicts Chill and Pain effects on enemies. That likely means that hitting enemies with Brand increased the Frost and Physical damage they take. You can, alternatively, sell the Outward Strange Rusted Sword for 15s.
