The PlayStation VR2 could become compatible with PC in the future, according to the team behind Windows driver creator iVRy, but getting to that point involves lots of effort and likely additional hardware.
iVRy has already put out drivers for several headsets that are unsupported on PC, allowing users to play SteamVR games through them, and has shared a series of interesting new findings from its continued effort to make the PSVR2 compatible with PC.
PSVR 2 Compatible With PC
“PSVR2 was blocking VR modes by saying it couldn’t do DSC, iVRy tweeted, as spotted by VGC.
“We modified an AMD Open Source Linux GPU driver to force DSC. Now we know how to put the PSVR2 into VR mode, so we can design some hardware to do it on Windows. ‘Can PSVR2 be used on PC?’ - Yes.”
The team proceeded to reply to multiple questions from its followers in the tweet’s comment section but, while the progress it made is certainly notable, PSVR2 will likely not be compatible with PC any time soon.
“No, it’s a long way to go from here until PSVR2 is usable on PC,” the driver creator replied to one user. “But this is most likely the last of the major hurdles out of the way, of which there have been a few. Now it’s just regular reverse-engineering undocumented hardware and writing drivers for it.”
It also noted that its current progress “is where one would normally expect to be in the first few days.”
In a separate tweet, it clarifies that, due to how the PSVR2 is built, ensuring compatibility with PC would require additional hardware in the form of an adapter.
“Everyone will need an adapter (apart from some AMD users on Linux). That adapter doesn’t exist yet. We have to design and build one. Then hopefully some hardware company will pick it up and mass-produce it.”
Whether or not this will pan out in a way that makes PSVR2 compatible with PC at some point in the future remains to be seen.
Nevertheless, in the absence of official support from Sony, iVRy’s work is slowly but steadily bringing that prospect closer.
