Exploration lies at the core of Prologue, whose ever-changing wilderness is shaped by machine learning-powered terrain generation technology. The title balances “adventure and discovery with intricate survival systems such as caloric intake, body temperature regulation, and shelter discovery and maintenance,” according to its publisher.
Prologue: Go Wayback! Gameplay Trailer
Each run of Prologue: Go Wayback! challenges us to navigate our surroundings while searching for vital resources that keep us alive. Our goal is to make our way to the Weather Tower, the structure that acts as our sole extraction point.
The unpredictable nature of the wilderness encourages us to read the landscape to avoid getting lost while figuring out the safest routes ahead.
We’ll have to contend with the weather, learning to recognize the early signs that warn us of terrifying storms, temperature drops, and blizzards
“Beyond the elements, hunger and cold pose constant threats, demanding careful rationing and sheltering strategies.” the publisher explains in an emailed press release.
“Navigating the world will require skill in and mastering orienteering with a map and compass, reading the environment for resources, and making critical survival decisions at every step.”
Prologue: Go Wayback! is what Playerunknown Productions considers “the first step in a new journey” meant to culminate with creating the Melba Engine.
It takes the terrain generation technology from the survival game and infuses it into “a highly specialized in-house game engine” that’s meant to be used in both an unannounced title as well as project Artemis, “a massive sandbox world designed for emergent interactions, player creativity, and ultimate freedom.”
Prologue: Go Wayback! is currently aiming for a summer 2025 Steam Early Access launch. It will be priced at $20 or your regional equivalent.
