Resident Evil 2 Remake is out now and players are busy sampling the thrills and terrors of the Raccoon City Police Department building. By far the biggest threat is the terrifying Tyrant known as Mr X, and at least one player has had the nightmare scenario - that there are Resident Evil 2 Remake Two Mr Xs, rather than one.
It's clearly possible to get two Tyrants in the game, as the video below from speedrunner BeastGamingHD shows, but how is this done? And why does it happen at all? Most importantly, as bizarre as it seems, is it canonically correct with the story that there are two Mr Xs running around?
Resident Evil 2 Remake Two Mr Xs - Are there two Tyrants?
As the video above shows, YouTuber BeastGamingHD was attempting a speedrun when he somehow managed to trigger two Mr Xs, which of course he didn't last long against. How is it possible? The theory is that Mr X doesn't literally follow you through the entire police station, instead Capcom spawns him in certain locations when the player is at a select point. In trying to get through the game so quickly, BeastGamingHD managed to hit two of those trigger points quickly.
Unfortunately, there is no sure-fire way to replicate this glitch, and BeastGamingHD himself doesn't know how it happened. The Tyrants were both just triggered, and there's no obvious method yet for triggering them. Players may work it out in the future, however.
However, while this is undoubtedly a glitch, is it canonically correct that there are actually two Mr Xs? (SPOILER WARNING) While generally Mr X, otherwise known as the Tyrant T-00, is supposed to have been the only one dropped on the RPD to eliminate survivors, if you've played either the original or Remake you'll know it doesn't quite go down like that. In fact, Mr X seems to get properly killed in both Leon and Claire's campaign, in different ways - in Claire's he's ripped apart by G-Virus Birkin halfway through the story, and in Leon's he's the final boss and is blown apart with a rocket launcher.
The prevailing theories are that, either Capcom messed up the storytelling (possible), or Mr X regenerated after encountering Birkin (unlikely), but it's also possible that a second Tyrant was dropped after Birkin destroyed one and Leon set off an alarm in the NEST laboratory.
There's no connection between this story theory and the two Mr Xs glitch admittedly, but it's still fun to think about. What do you think? Do you think it's likely? Have you encountered the two Tyrants glitch? Let us know below.
