Sony’s awaited PlayStation 5 design refresh begins making its way to users this month, and setup images have now revealed that its attachable Blu-Ray disc drive requires online pairing before its first use.
The small print on boxes containing the new PS5 model first confirmed the requirement, reading as follows: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.”
PS5 Disc Drive Online Pairing
Setup images posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, further confirmed this to be the case.
Upon starting the console, users are met with the following message: “Can’t use your disc drive. You need to connect your PS5 to the network to register your disk drive to your PS5.”
The PS5 disc drive’s online requirement was likely included to safeguard against piracy and preventing other modifications.
Nevertheless, it has sparked concerns among potential users who are worried about what will happen when the servers used to pair consoles with disc drives might be taken offline.
It’s unclear whether or not an update could see the requirement removed either in the near future or once PS5 support begins to ramp down.
Sony has yet to address the issue in an official capacity.
The slimmer PS5 models that support the disc drive begin rolling out this November in the United States and globally in the following months.
