Space Engineers 2’s release date is easily one of this year’s highlights for anyone who fancies exploration, construction, and survival elements in their open-world sandbox game.
The original title, released well back in 2019 after a fairly lengthy stay in early access, still has a dedicated community who regularly tinkers away in the vastness of space. Building on everything it has learned during this time, developer Keen Software House has great plans for its ambitious sequel.

Space Engineers 2’s early access release date is currently slated for January 27, 2025, when it will become available in Steam Early Access.
This is an alpha version focused on its creative mode, so you may want to hold off on purchasing the game if you’re expecting a (more) complete experience.

As expected, future updates will gradually add new content while addressing issues and fixing bugs. Another goal of early access is to gather and incorporate player feedback into how the sequel shakes up before its full launch.
The studio currently plans to develop the game for “approximately three years (end of 2027)” before fully releasing it, although it is worth keeping in mind that this can change.
Space Engineers 2 Gameplay
Set in the distant Almagest system, Space Engineers 2 promises a more refined take on building anything from starships to space stations.
With the same open-world sandbox philosophy at its core and the new VRAGE3 engine powering it, the sequel uses the new 25 cm Unified Grid system, allowing blocks to fit seamlessly together.
Mounting point visualization and grid lines further contribute to making the building more intuitive and easy to interact with.
We can also expect Grid Undo and refined CTRL controls that allow for precisely rotating and zooming in on pieces alongside a new maximum velocity of 310 m/s for characters and 300 m/s for grids.
The addition of magboots and automatic jetpack activation should translate to fewer situations that see us falling off platforms while fine-tuning our creations. Furthermore, the title’s redesigned user interface should make it more approachable for new players.

Space Engineers 2’s early access version will be available at launch on PC, through Steam. We could see it arriving on consoles at a later date, similar to its predecessor, but this has yet to be officially confirmed.
