Publisher Kalypso Media and developer Realmforge Studios today announced that Spacebase Startopia, their upcoming space station management sim, has locked down its release date to late March.
Based on 2001’s Spacebase, the game puts players in command of a donut-shaped space station and tasks them with managing it. The challenge comes from properly building rooms across the space station’s three decks and catering to the needs and desires of its many visiting aliens.
Spacebase Startopia’s sub-deck acts as the station’s “industrial beating hear,t” making sure that the entire structure stays afloat. Above it waits the fun-deck, with its arcades and bars ready to provide entertainment for the plethora of visitors that flock to it.
Those seeking a temporary escape in nature go to the bio-deck, only being reminded that they’re actually in space when they look up and to the sides. “This vibrant and often absurd universe offers players an exciting blend of city-building and base-management, with a flash of RTS skirmishes,” reads an emailed press release.
The station’s sardonic AI, Val, ensures that you won’t feel too lonely while hovering above large crowds of aliens by constantly keeping an eye on how well (or poorly) you perform.
At launch, the game will feature three modes: a story campaign that spans 10 missions, a sandbox mode where you can let your creativity run free, and a multiplayer mode that caters to both competitive and co-operative play for up to 4 players.
Spacebase Startopia is available for pre-order and has set its release date to March 26. The title is headed to PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4. A Nintendo Switch version is planned to launch later in 2021.
