There’s no debate really, Valve’s Steam Deck has taken the world by storm. People who always wanted to get into PC gaming have been given an opportunity thanks to the low price point, making for a low barrier to entry, and with Valve ramping up production, the wait time on the 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB is next to nothing now.
However, despite being more like a console than a full-on PC, with a user interface designed for ease of use, there are times you’ll need to bring up the keyboard on your Steam Deck, and we’re going to explain how to do that in multiple ways.
How do you bring up the Steam Deck Keyboard?
In the standard gaming mode, bringing up the Steam Deck keyboard is very simple indeed. Valve has implemented multiple shortcuts for users for exactly this reason.
So should you need to get typing to enter a code, or even input your name for a game that is only partially Deck Verified, all you need to do is hold down the Steam Button and tap the X button, and the on-screen keyboard will appear. Do not let go of the Steam button when tapping X, or this won’t work.
You can then type with the touch screen keyboard that appears, or you can use the left analog stick and A-button to type instead, or even use the right touch-pad to select letters, though this is a slightly awkward way to do things.
To remove the keyboard you hit “B”, or you can touch the very bottom right icon on the on-screen keyboard, which will make it go away.
If you are in Desktop mode, this shortcut will still work, though if you’re planning on using your Deck as a PC like this for any length of time, a good keyboard is recommended.
