The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was announced as an upcoming action-adventure title developed by Daedalic Entertainment in partnership with Middle Earth Enterprises.
If the title didn’t give it away, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will focus on the ex-hobbit that both helps and hinders Frodo during his journey towards Mount Doom.
The first game to feature the unlikely protagonist will, however, tread new ground, “telling his story before we learn about what happens to him in the books”.
According to a PC Gamer interview with Daedalic Entertainment CEO Carsten Fichtelmann, the company already knows which locations in Middle Earth players will get to visit in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
As Gollum is a frail character, there’s a good chance that stealth will play a role in the upcoming action-adventure game.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will also emphasize the character’s split personality. “You’ll come to decisions you have to make, and you’ll have the two voices talking to you. He may change his mind, and this is a clue about how it will play.”, Fichtelmann told PC Gamer.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is scheduled to release in 2021, which makes the lack of specific details understandable, as the game is most likely in early stages of development. Nonetheless, if Daedalic pulls it off, a game featuring Gollum could prove to be a breath of fresh air for media set in Tolkien’s universe.
