The Outer Worlds isn't a stealth game, but it has many areas that are just restricted - and venturing in to them often means the people in those areas won't be happy with you. That's what The Outer Worlds Holographic Shroud is for - to sneak in to those areas, but how do you use it?
The Shroud is an item you get given by Dr Phineas Welles after leaving Edgewater, and you're told that you can use it to disguise yourself as anyone and enter Restricted areas - but how do you use the Holographic Shroud in The Outer Worlds? Do you have to activate or equip it? And once you do so, how does it work?
The Outer Worlds Holographic Shroud
Dr Welles gives you the Holographic Shroud just after taking off for the first time - you can find it in the Captain's quarters. You can pick it up and are given a general description of what it does - but not how to use it, when, or what using it is like! The Shroud will show up in your inventory under quest items, but you can't equip it.
The good news is: you don't have to equip the Holographic Shroud, it's all automatic. It will activate by itself the moment you enter an area marked as 'Restricted' - you'll know these by the words floating in the doorway. You don't have to do anything except walk in to a Restricted area. The first time you do it, you'll get a message saying the Holographic Shroud is active.
While you're exploring the Restricted area with the Shroud active, you'll see a purple bar at the bottom of the screen - which will drain as you move. This is your Shroud meter. If you need to recharge it, leave the restricted area. If it runs out and someone sees you, you better hope you can talk your way out of it! Also, try not to allow any NPCs to stare at you for a long time - they'll get suspicious eventually and your cover will be blown.
Yes, this does all mean that you can't use the Holographic Shroud in combat - or in any areas not officially marked as 'restricted', which is a bit of a shame.
