Publisher and developer CD Projekt Red today released a behind the scenes featurette that gives us a better look a the work that went into making The Witcher IV’s impressive cinematic trailer.
The 10-minute video also offers plenty of insight into what the studio and its collaborators intended to transmit with the upcoming RPG’s first trailer, ranging from the type of atmosphere they were gunning for to what its main characters represent and beyond.
The Witcher 4 Cinematic Trailer Behind the Scenes
Interestingly enough, The Witcher 4’s cinematic trailer is “an adaptation of a story that we actually want to tell in the game,” according to Narrative Director Philipp Webber. “We’re not going to give you a black or white situation. We expect you to […] make some tough choices.”
Another interesting tidbit reveals how “it was very important” that the first monologue we hear, as Mioni prepares to be sent off as sacrifice was written “in a way that Geralt could have said that about Ciri as well.”
Ciri and Mioni, the trailer’s leading ladies, are describes as “a little bit mirrors of each other.”
While the latter accepts her destiny, based on a superstition, and willingly heads off into the woods prepared to forfeit her life so that her village may thrive, Ciri rejects destiny, recognizing the fear in the woman’s voice and going off to rescue her.
Another important aspect was keeping the characters and environments true to both Slavic folklore and Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.
The motion capture session for The Witcher IV’s cinematic trailer lasted for 14 days, according to Producer Magdalena Rudnicka.
During it, motion capture company Alpha7 created physical representations of the Bauk’s arms – far less impressive than the monster itself but decidedly interesting to learn about –, which helped make the final fight scene more impactful.
The whole behind the scenes featurette is a good watch, as it touches upon several other aspects of what went through the developer and other involved companies’ minds when they were putting The Witcher IV’s cinematic trailer together.
It’s also a testament to the sheer amount of work whole teams of people put into making a six-minute video that’s meant to leave a lasting impression until The Witcher IV’s marketing campaign kicks into full gear.
