CD Projekt Red confirmed it was working on the next entry in its wildly popular series as early as 2022 before announcing in November 2024 that the sequel had finally entered full production.
The Witcher 4 Release Date
The Witcher IV’s official cinematic reveal didn’t include any details regarding a release date but did showcase the game’s new protagonist, Ciri, in all her monster hunting glory.
Given how news of it entering full-scale production only emerged in November 2024, it seems highly unlikely that we’ll get to play it in 2025.
CD Projekt Red may also decide to take its time working on its next big RPG, following Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch, so we’ll have to wait for more details before we can even estimate a potential release date for The Witcher IV.
The switch to a new leading character is anything but surprising. The title marks the beginning of a new saga whose earliest announcement featured imagery of a Lynx medallion, whereas Geralt belongs to the Wolf school.
It’s also a natural evolution given the events of the third game – during which Ciri played a pivotal role –, as well as the final moments of its Blood and Wine DLC, which allow the rugged witcher to enjoy some much-needed respite.
That being said, while the new saga revolves around Ciri, who now takes on the mantle of professional monster hunter herself, The White Wolf will appear, in some capacity, in the fourth game.
The Witcher IV’s gameplay and story haven’t been detailed extensively just yet, although the first tidbits do suggest that series veterans should feel right at home when returning to the Continent.
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the title will follow in its predecessors’ footsteps, being a single-player open-world RPG that aims for a more “brutal dark-fantasy” tone.
Although Ciri can’t quite match Geralt’s vast experience as a monster hunter, she’s proficient with both steel and silver swords while her strong connection to magic could pave the way for an even more versatile fighting style than her mentor’s.
So far, we don’t quite know what platforms The Witcher IV is aiming for, although it’s likely a fair bet to expect it to land on PC and major consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (or their next-gen equivalents) when it launches.
What we can say for certain is that the game trades CD Projekt Red’s proprietary engine for Unreal Engine 5. In 2022, the developer also noted that it wanted to avoid any form of storefront exclusivity.
We should learn more details about The Witcher 4’s release date, story, gameplay, and platforms over the coming months and years.
