The quickest way to advance in Valheim is to gather enough materials to build, build, and then build some more. In this quick guide we’ll be looking at flint, which is the best early game material for tools and weapons.
To begin with, flint can be found near water, so head over to your nearest shoreline and dislodge it from the ground, picking it up and adding to your inventory. You won’t have an immediate use for it yet, but it’s good to grab as much as you can while you’re out and about grabbing some wood and stone.
Flint Crafting In Valheim
Craft a hammer, and once you’ve got enough materials to build a workbench, find an open area to place it down. This unlocks a lot of building options, but before you can use the bench you need to enclose it with walls and at least part of a roof.
This is done by selecting the hammer on your hotbar and right clicking to bring up the building options. Walls can be rotated with the scroll wheel and snapped together easily. Be sure to add a gate and a piece of roof to the structure.
Now you have a basic shelter you can open the workbench and see what’s available to build.
Valheim Workbench
The workbench has plenty of stuff to keep you occupied for a while from weapons and armour, to clothes and tools. Right now we’re focusing on what we can build with flint.
- Flint Axe - The flint axe improves on the stone but not by enough to really warrant making first. It does 25% more damage to trees and creatures, but with the amount you'll be chopping it will wear down quickly. You can repair items, but it's probably best to stick to stone unless you have spare flint.
- Flint Knife - This is a useful tool but requires leather scraps first. You can get these from hunting animals like boar which is best done with a bow and arrow crafted at the bench, but can also be achieved with melee weapons like the spear.
- Flint Spear - If you're looking for an effective weapon, you can't go wrong with a spear and as there is no stone variant, this makes a nice option for your first real weapon. This also requires some leather scraps, so get hunting!
- Flinthead Arrow - Once you find your first feathers, you unlock the recipe for these improved arrows. They need only 2 flint for 20 arrows along with the other materials making these good value for taking on a boss, but we'd stick with wood arrows for hunting.

Once you have levelled up the workbench, the upgrade tab will allow you to improve these, and almost everything else you have to level 2, increasing damage, durability, etc at the cost of different resources.
