The rumors were true: Warcraft 3: Reforged has received a major 2.0 update which adds upscaled original graphics, new features, and much-needed fixes and QoL upgrades. On top of it, Blizzard has shadow-dropped Warcraft 1 & 2 Remastered too.
While we were fully expecting a major rework of Warcraft 3: Reforged following years of complaints after a half-baked launch and thin patches, the second announcement is a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. The approach to remastering Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness (as well as the Beyond the Dark Portal exp. pack) seems to be more traditional and similar to the work done on the very successful StarCraft remaster released back in 2017.
Warcraft 3: Reforged 2.0 (available for free to owners of the game) and the two new remasters, which complete the modernized RTS trilogy, are out now on Battle.net, sold separately or bundled together in a ‘Remastered Battle Chest’ that saves players some money. It seems that a Steam launch isn’t on the cards at the moment, but never say never, as Blizzard now has a firm presence on Valve’s platform with Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.
Warcraft 1: Remastered is selling for $9.99 and includes a toggle between the classic art and updated hand-painted artwork, including visual updates to the UI. Modern health bars, increased unit selection, hotkeys, better controls, and cleaned-up music are part of the work done on the game too.
Warcraft 2: Remastered is selling for $14.99 and includes the same updates as its predecessor, also applied to the Beyond the Dark Portal expansion. Moreover, both classic and custom maps are available for online play with up to 8 players.
Warcraft 3: Reforged is selling for $29.99 and includes everything that was already there, with the 2.0 patch (seemingly developed internally at Blizzard) promising to fix most of what was broken and adding more faithful ‘reforged’ visuals that can be fully customized alongside a revamped UI and more quality-of-life features that players had been asking for.
The Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest, which also includes Reforged’s ‘Spoils of War’ edition’s bonuses, is selling for $39.99 and is available now. A physical edition hasn’t been announced.
