Fans of the popular Warhammer 40,000 series are in for an exciting treat with the upcoming release of the newest addition in the franchise—Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a first-person shooter game, but there’s a twist. Rather than featuring sharp, detailed, modern graphics with realistic shadows and environments, this game brings gamers back to the glory of ’90s gaming thanks to its retro visuals.
Warhammer 40,000 Boltgun Takes Gamers Back to the '90s
The Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun trailer showcases the game’s intriguing concept of combining old-school pixel sprites with smooth animations. In a blog post, Grant Stewart, the lead designer of Boltgun, explained that a hybrid process is used to achieve this look.
He mentioned that retro games use 2D sprites for enemies. To bring these to life in a modern game, the enemies are modeled and rigged in modern ways before being digitally photographed and stitched back together into 2D flipbook animations. This makes the overall animation smoother while maintaining its pixelated retro graphics, as shown in the game’s trailer.
In this game, you’ll play as a battle-hardened Space Marine on a mission to defeat Warriors and demons of Chaos across the galaxy. With various weapons to choose from, set off to blast through an explosion of sprites, shred and slice through the worst heretics.
Set to release on May 23, 2023, the game is already available for pre-order on Steam for $19.79. So far, the game seems to have gotten a lot of positive feedback, with some claiming the game to “feel like a breath of fresh air” in these modern times. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’d like to relive nostalgia for old-school shooter games.
