X4: Foundations is a bit of a sleeper hit among the more inclined clientele. This fascinating RPG/simulator combo offers a fully-simulated virtual universe to explore, fight, or trade across, and Egosoft, the developers, have got lots more in store for it.
X4: Foundations Online Multiplayer hasn't often been discussed due to the apparent complexity of the game and its dedicated engine, but it seems that developers have now started making baby steps towards this pipe dream, too!
X4: Foundations multiplayer functionality is being introduced with the game's latest title update, 1.50, and it's coming in the form of Online Ventures which allow players to send out their spaceships to other players' universes! Mind, the functionality is still in its early stages of development, and there's not much in the way of interactivity here when all is said and done, but it's a start, and a very promising one at that, too.
Egosoft have warned players that online venture gameplay may go wrong as the feature hasn't yet been thoroughly tested, but there's no apparent risk of losing one's save game, and neither should you expect any losses in regard to how stable your build of X4: Foundations is.
Participation in this new online functionality is entirely optional, and in case you'd prefer your X4: Foundations experience to remain a fully single-player endeavour, perhaps you'd be interested in taking a gander at Game Watcher's selection of mods, instead.
