With XDefiant, Ubisoft looks to draw the attention of free-to-play first-person shooter fans, promising fast-paced action and a host of factions from across its library of games when its release date approaches.
XDefiant’s focus on speed and realistic gunplay does also suggests that it is aiming for Call of Duty’s crown, looking to give Activision’s largely unchallenged series a run for its money. Here is everything we know about the free-to-play first-person shooter, including details about its release date, gameplay, and more.
XDefiant Release Date
Ubisoft has not given XDefiant a release date and it’s possible we may not see the game launching until late 2024.
Initially targeting a 2023 launch, the title encountered issues when being submitted to be certified for release on consoles.
Later, in early October, the team behind it spotted “some inconsistencies in the game experience that we need to address prior to launching our Preseason,” seemingly delaying the title indefinitely.
XDefiant Story
While XDefiant’s factions are drawn from several of Ubisoft’s existing worlds, its focus goes heavily into the PvP side of things. By the looks of it, a traditional story campaign isn’t on the cards, at least for launch.
XDefiant Gameplay
XDefiant focuses on fast-paced gunplay, featuring specialised factions and a host of customisation options for its existing arsenal.
The title’s five factions are the equivalent of classes, having unique abilities, as well as an ultra skill that the developer claims can turn around entire matches.
Echelon’s spies can use stealth, being optimal flankers, while Cleaners bring flamethrowers to a gunfight, specializing in area denial.
Libertad’s freedom fighters then excel at keeping allies in the fight through supportive skills, DedSec’s operatives can deny opponents the usage of abilities, while Phantoms deploy tanky soldiers who specialise in defense.
The competing six-player teams can be made up of any characters from any faction, which can then be switched as the match progresses and the need to answer different challenges arises.
Loadouts can also be changed during matches, allowing you to pick between pistols, assault rifles, sniper rifles, and other weapons, each able to be customized with different attachments.
XDefiant aims to launch with 14 maps that fuel arena shooter-style battles. There will be both a casual and ranked mode. In addition, crossplay support has also been confirmed.
XDefiant Storefronts and Price
XDefiant will be free-to-play, so you’ll be able to jump into the action without paying a dime. PC players can pick it up on Ubisoft Connect, while the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will be available on their respective storefronts.
