The Enterprise and Defiant | A Romulan Warbird |
If you’re a big Star Trek fan, then you might notice a few similarities between Legacy and Star Trek: Armada. However, the games are pretty distinct. Armada was more of a traditional RTS, but Legacy will up size of pretty much everything. Rather than micromanage a huge fleet of tiny ships, you’ll instead focus on managing a small fleet of huge ships. This approach really brings gamers close to the action as these large vessels pound away at each other in space.
The game will span pretty much all that is Trekkie, from the original series all the way up to the most recent series, Enterprise. The main single player campaign will be federation only, but you’ll still be able to take command of some of your favorite starships from the different Star Trek sagas. In multiplayer there will be four different races to play as, adding the Romulans, Borg and Klingons into the mix! Each will have their own distinct ships, each with advantages and disadvantages. Overall, there will be over 60 different ships at your command.
The battles will certainly be impressive, from the high detail of the massive ships to the incredible damage effects. When a ship takes a hit you’ll immediately be able to tell from the damage on the hull. You’ll even be able to look at the ships hull and figure out which part of the ship needs repairs. If enough damage is dealt, ships will begin to break apart and scatter debris throughout space. The level of detail on the ships is amazing, and fans of Star Trek will certainly appreciate how much work has been done to bring the Star Trek universe to life! There’s more than just the battles to admire, though. With colorful nebulas, shimmering stars and debris filling space, the environments are sure to be make fans feel right at home.
Klingons taking phaser-fire | A Federation ship being dwarfed by a Borg Cube |
As Admiral of a small task force, you have command over four federation ships. You can assign commands to these four ships, or take direct control over each individually. You’ll also be able to determine how each ship spends its resources. For example, you can cut down the power to the shields and spend more on weapons if you’d like, but then you risk taking more damage. When a battle is complete you’ll be awarded with command points that you can spend in order to purchase new ships or repair and upgrade your old ones.
The tides of war can turn quickly, as I was shown at an E3 demo. The federation and Klingon forces were desperately trying to defend Deep Space Nine from Romulan invaders. Just as the Federation forces were gaining an advantage, the Borg arrived. Realizing the Borg are a threat to all existence, everyone joined forces to battle the Borg! Flying up close to a gigantic Borg Cube is almost awe inspiring. If any of you are familiar with The Borg, you know how huge their ships are, even compared to the Enterprise, which isn’t exactly small. Watching the Federation’s largest ships be dwarfed by this Titanic vessel was definitely intimidating, but as the entire fleet turned their weapons on the Borg, it proved to be no match.
While no official announcements have yet been made, Bethesda is currently working on gathering some familiar Star Trek talents to do voice work for the game. We were also told that a well-known writer will be brought on board to write the game’s storyline.
