Age of Wonders 4 departs from past entries in the series in a few notable ways, focusing on race customization and procedurally-generated levels while leaving behind a traditional, guided campaign. For those of us who primarily play skirmish this is good news, but one question remains unanswered: will the title support multiplayer?
Age of Wonders 4 multiplayer would allow you to show off your custom race to friends and have them join in on all the madness. Whether it’s taking on difficult AI together or pitting your cannibal toads against their feudal, magic-wielding cat people, its inclusion would not only add to the already staggering amount of available choice, but also contribute to prolonging the game’s lifespan.
Age of Wonders 4 Multiplayer
The good news is that, yes, Age of Wonders 4 will feature multiplayer at launch, so you will be able to play with or against friends as soon as the game goes live in May.

Its Steam page confirms as much, with its dedicated portion of the Paradox Interactive website confirming that both “live and asynchronous multiplayer” are planned.
“In Age of Wonders 4 Multiplayer, each player can take their turn when it suits them, without requiring all the players in the session to be online at the same time. It’s easy to fit some play time into a busy day,” the FAQ explains.
Game Director Lennart Sas also shared a couple more details about multiplayer in Age of Wonders 4 during the game’s announcement stream.
There, he noted that AoW4 features “head-to-head multiplayer using simultaneous turns as well as a cloud-based system where you play a turn whenever it pleases you, and then you shoot the save up to the cloud for a friend to pick it up.”
In an AMA from April, the developer also confirmed that there will be no ranking in multiplayer. A mode where players can simply hop into turn-based battles is also not planned.
