Warning: This guide covers the final boss of Forspoken, the Susurrus Boss Fight, which is the final boss of the campaign, and therefore contains major story spoilers.
If you’ve made it through to the finale of Forspoken’s story campaign, you’ll already be aware of the big late-game twist, where it’s revealed that Frey’s somewhat sinister sidekick, Cuff, is actually the trapped demon known as Susurrus. Having dealt with the four corrupted Tantas one way or another, all that remains is for Frey to take down the demon and save the land of Athia - as is her destiny. But this fight is long and tough, even on the default difficulty level, and will require a lot of patience and perseverance.
How to unlock the Susurrus Boss Fight
Before you can face the demon, you’ll need to make a choice. The spirit of Cinta, the final Tanta, offers Frey the chance to return to New York and leave Athia to its fate. If you choose this option, you’ll have a cutscene of Frey and her cat, Homer, walking the streets of New York City and the credits will roll. That’s it. No boss fight, no post-game; you’re done.
However, choose the other option and you’ll trigger the final sequence where Frey fights desperately to save Cipal and Athia from the demon’s onslaught. It’s a fight of four stages, so we’ll cover them all in order.
Forspoken Susurrus Boss Fight Stage 1
First, you’ll need to deal with Susurrus’ corrupted minions. Initially, you’ll face a trio of corrupted alligators who are weak to Sila’s red fire magic. Then you’ll deal with a seemingly never-ending flock of corrupted crows, which are weak to Frey’s purple nature magic. Finally, Susurrus will set an Altered Goliath on you.
This boss fight is quite tough in itself, but you should have faced several of these before. The twist is that Goliath will also have a huge pack of corrupted wolves with him. Switch to Olas’ green lightning magic to exploit their vulnerabilities here. As usual, keep moving with Flow, and try to stay out of Goliath’s reach.
Once you’re done, you’ll trigger a cutscene and join the Cipal survivors in the library. Make sure to talk to everyone you can here. Some will give you things like healing draughts or nuggets to upgrade your gear. There’s an upgrade bench on the back wall. Make sure you have enough draughts and you’ve fully upgraded, because this is it. Once you walk out of the library, you’re in it until either Frey or Susurrus are dead. Well, sort of. I mean, Frey can respawn, but that doesn’t sound as dramatic.
Forspoken Susurrus Boss Fight Stage 2
The second stage of the boss fight is fairly simple. Riding on the back of Cinta in her dragon form, Frey has to shoot down flocks of corrupted crows summoned by Susurrus. You’ll need to target all the red crosses and do it quickly, as they will do quite a lot of damage if they hit you. Simply keep the dragon’s breath going as long as you can, and target Susurrus himself whenever he appears. Even damaging the birds will deplete his health bar, so go nuts.
Forspoken Susurrus Boss Fight Stage 3
After the cutscene, Frey will receive a new ability called Skip. Pressing in both analogue sticks will cause her to warp around for a few seconds, utterly avoiding any and all damage. It’s a very handy spell, and you’ll find it essential for what follows.
Susurrus will periodically appear in the sky above the courtyard, which is the only time you can damage him in this fight. He will hit you with multiple energy attacks, most of which can be easily avoided by using Flow. However, now and then you’ll receive a message to use Skip, which means he’s charging an ultimate attack. Skip will render you invincible, but only for a few seconds. Use Flow to dodge the rest of the laser beams, and return fire when possible.
The best magic to use is Olas’ green magic, which has the Pulse Dart spell. Hit him repeatedly, and then charge it to level 2 (providing you have it unlocked) to deliver a volley that does solid damage to him. Now and then you’ll need to face a batch of summoned enemies. When this happens, keep using Olas’ magic and go ham on the adds, ignoring Susurrus. This is the only time in the entire boss fight that you can replenish Healing Draughts dropped by enemies, so make sure you grab every one dropped. Keep moving and shooting to defeat him and enter the final phase.
Forspoken Susurrus Boss Fight Stage 4
In this phase, Susurrus will face you himself. He moves fast and does devastating damage with a number of different energy-based attacks. He’s initially weak to Prav’s blue water magic, so paste him with that while using Flow to avoid his attacks. After you’ve taken about 25% of his health, he’ll change tactics. A symbol will appear behind his wings, indicating which magic he’s now vulnerable to, so change accordingly.
He only has one truly irritating attack, whereby he’ll flood the ground with what looks like golden flowers that will come at you in rows like a bullet-hell shooter. Use Skip to avoid them, and then try to stay in the middle of two streams to stay alive.
His melee attacks can be parried to give you some breathing space, but you’re better off avoiding him and then landing as many attacks as possible before he realigns himself. Most of his primary attacks have big build-ups, so you’ll see them coming, but they can still be incredibly hard to avoid. When he’s at 25% health his attacks will become more desperate and more damaging, and he’ll introduce a super powerful beam attack that will do massive damage. You’ll also need to contend with tornadoes of corruption magic that will harm you if you step in them.
Once you beat him down to zero, you’ll need to hold both triggers when prompted to finish him off with a little help from your friends.
So there you go: that’s how to beat the Forspoken Susurrus Boss Fight and save Athia from the Break. Once it’s over, bask in the glory of your prowess and prepare to face the challenges of the post-game, if you dare.
