Details have emerged about the 360 version of Kane’s Wrath, the upcoming standalone expansion to Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. We spoke to the game’s producer Jim Vessella who shed some light on a new 360-exclusive game mode.
Kane’s Challenge is a “gauntlet of skirmish matches” with the player taking control of one of nine armies (the three original factions are present as well as six new sub-factions). Competing in a series of single matches, the player must climb a ladder, unlocking achievements and more along the way. “It’s a great way to learn about RTS games” said Vessella and confirmed there would be 20 new videos of Kane to be unlocked as you progress through Kane’s Challenge, with the baldy one either offering support or pouring scorn on your efforts.
The new game mode comes at the expense of the Risk-style Global Conquest mode that featured in the PC version of the game. According to Vessella, Global Conquest “did not test well with our 360 focus groups” due to its in-depth nature and controls that “did not transfer well to console playing”.
The 360 version of Kane’s Wrath will also feature the brand new CommandStick control system. A 12 slot radial system, the menu can be brought up in game by pulling down the right trigger. The new system is apparently far more intuitive than the controls in C&C 3 and now allows the player to manage unlimited build queues. Vessella claimed the new system isn’t too far behind the classic keyboard/mouse PC interface. “It’s not quite there yet,” he said, “but we’re very excited about it”.
Command and Conquer: Kane’s Wrath is expected to hit retail on June 27.
