Peter Molyneux has hinted the action RPG formula for Fable could change dramatically in the future, it could inhabit ”some new genre”.
More of the same would drive Fable ”off the cliff”, the Lionhead team will mix things up to keep it fresh. Molyneux is still gagged on his new ”insanely simple” game that has some”unbelievable” tech.
”Whatever happens in the future of Fable, I don’t want you to think you know exactly what features are going to be in there,” Molyneux tells Eurogamer. ”Don’t think about this as an RPG franchise –think about it as the world of Albion.
There’s a niche for Fable as there’s humour in there and there’s a Britishness and I think we’ll keep that side of it. But whether it’s more action or RPG or MMO or some new genre–that’s what we have to do.”
The veteran designer says he would love to have ”three enormously big things” featuring Fable 3 that could ”surprise and shock”, but this is all hypothetical he says.
”I would show you now if it was up to me,” continued Molyneux, speaking about his new upcoming game that isn’t Fable related. In fact this project hasn’t been given an official green light from Microsoft yet, they’re working on something tangible to show.
Strutting its stuff around the office though he teasingly says they received ”probably the best reaction I’ve ever seen to anything I’ve done.”
”When you look at it I think you’ll say, ‘Well, that’s just insanely simple. Why has it taken so long?’ But what makes it so hard –and this is teasing you horribly–is making it so simple, and yet to have all this unbelievable technology behind the thing.”
It’s doubtful an E3 announcement is waiting in the wings for this new ‘simple’ game from Lionhead, but maybe Molyneux will let something slip.
