According to ”an inside source”, Sony and LucasArts are partnering up again to develop a casual MMO powered by the Free Realms engine, SOE’s free-to-play onliner.
The setting for this third Star Wars MMO would be the Clone Wars. Free Realms currently has over 4 million registered users, and so obviously has something to offer. Still, it’s just rumour.
”Ten Ton Hammer has learned from an inside source that Sony Online Entertainment has once again partnered up with LucasArts to do another Star Wars MMO,” reports Ten Ton Hammer.
”While we have not yet learned the title of the upcoming game, it sounds like SOE is planning to use the browser-based Free Realms engine to power the game, and the game’s setting will be the Clone Wars.”
Sony Online Entertainment already operates Star Wars Galaxies, but changes to the entire gameplay mechanics of the MMO didn’t go down well with the original user base, causing it to haemorrhage subscribers.
The other Star Wars MMO in development is the hugely ambitious Star Wars The Old Republic from BioWare, creator of Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic. It in fact takes a similar direction in terms of art style as the Clone Wars TV series does.
Free Realms is exceedingly popular, and has micro-transactions, so tapping into the Star Wars universe with the free-to-play formula seems almost… logical. What say you, videogamer?
