Strategy Informer got top-secret clearance to go behind enemy lines to bring you this exclusive interview by Dark Pivot, the co-leader of the Nazi Zombie mod for Half-Life 2. Enjoy the interview, but try not to get too scared.
Strategy Informer: Tell us a little bit about Nazi Zombies. What makes it so different and unique than the other Half-Life 2 mods out there?
Dark Pivot: Nazi Zombies: Source is basically a mod for Half-Life 2 modification that brings the Nazi Zombies game type from Call of Duty WaW to the source engine. There are a few reasons for doing this. Many people that own Half-Life 2 don’t have WaW, so we would like for them to enjoy the Nazi Zombies experience also. This is not an exact recreation. There are going to be many things different from the original Nazi Zombies. It is multiplayer, but you can also play solo. There is a possibility of having bots also, so you can play with team members if you don’t have any other friends to play with.
Strategy Informer: What was your inspiration for the mod?
Dark Pivot: About six months ago, my friend who is a Half-Life 2 mapper named Xieneus made a Half-Life 2 map based on Nazi Zombies. It was a great zombie survival map, and it is what eventualy started the mod. The map will be featured in the mod, it is called Dead Camp.
Strategy Informer: Is this mod going to be strictly horror or will it have some comical elements to it?
Dark Pivot: This mod is not going to be all horror. We are going to have some comical elements in the mod, similar to some of the things in the original. Of course, we will be adding our own pieces of comedy here and there.
Strategy Informer: What elements are you providing to make a “scary” atmosphere for the gamer?
Dark Pivot: Mostly, maps will just be dark and creepy. Some maps will go away from that though, and be outside in the daytime for some variety. Some maps may have fog across the floor, broken blinking lights, and much more.
Strategy Informer: What was the main decision around only making WWII weapons into the mod?
Dark Pivot: There is only one reason why we are really having WWII weapons only, and that is because the original Nazi Zombies has only WWII weapons. Also, the game is WWII themed, so it wouldn’t make sense to have different weapons. BUT… we are still going to have bonus weapons like the Ray Gun, and a lightning gun. We are planning to have different weapons with future updates after the mod’s release.
Strategy Informer: What stage of development is the mod in? Do you have a release date in mind?
Dark Pivot: We do not have any release date yet, but most likely the first release will be late this year, if it is not released this year, it will definitely be released early next year. Right now, we have quite a bit of progress on the mapping and programming. We are having a few problems with weapon modeling, but we will get there eventually.
Strategy Informer: Anything else you would like to tell us?
Dark Pivot: We are putting a lot of effort into this mod to make sure that players will have a very fun experience when playing. We will be focusing on minor details also, like view bobbing, realistic weapon recoil, and more. The random weapons chest will be featured in the mod, along with the familiar weapon buying and barricade system. There will be updates after the mod is released with new weapons, maps, and enemies, to make sure this is going to be a very fun mod!
