Crysis 2 is coming to consoles, thanks to CryENGINE 3. Scaling the new tech ”whilst maintaining” fidelity and performance was ”big challenge”.
”Crytek has been offering the CryENGINE for many years now, more than 10 to be accurate. The decision to enter the console market for engines was first driven by our desire to make console games,” Crytek’s Cevat Yerli told GameReactor, reports CVG.
Crysis was an exclusive to the PC, as was its expansion. It pushed the boundaries for many top of the line gaming rigs, proving the CryENGINE has meaty ambitions. The new CryENGINE 3 is ‘scalable’ for performance on both the PC and next-gen consoles.
”That’s what we always wanted to do. The big challenge during the development of CryENGINE3 has been scaling the engine whilst maintaining the visual quality and performance.”
”This is always challenging; problems occurred of course, but we’re really proud that our teams have managed to solve them as we proved in line with several engine presentations and will prove” this with Crysis 2, added the Crytek boss.
Not long ago, executive producer Nathan Camarillo revealed the Xbox 360 proved a little restraining for the dev team. ”Creative constraints can be refreshing,” he said.
”In the end this will make for the best experience for the gamer, because we will spend more time per feature, making it polished, rather than spreading ourselves thinly just because we can.” A profoundly good point, or hogwash to try and placate PC?
Crysis 2 releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC sometime this September - if a leaked internal release schedule from GAME holds true. The sequel takes place in New York.
