NCsoft has announced that one of the largest MMOs in the world, Lineage II, will be going free-to-play. The conversion will be timed with the release of its upcoming update, Goddess of Destruction. The update is the largest in the MMO’s history, which NCsoft claims features more than 400 hours of new content.
The free-to-play model will be fairly generous. NCsoft states that the entire MMO’s content will be completely free, claiming, ”There will be no restricted zones, no limited class selection and no gear stuck behind a pay wall.” Instead, the game will be monetized with supplemental in-game items and premium item packs from the L2 Store that, according to the press release, ”provide significant bonuses and improvements to accelerate their character’s progression. Upon reaching level 85, players will experience the game’s all new classes, skills, bosses and zones that amplify epic castle sieges, arena-style battles and more, all for free.”
Lineage II first launched in South Korea in 2003, then arrived on Western shores the following year.
