Last week, we reported that Canadian cable company and internet provider Rogers Communications had admitted that its customers playing World of Warcraft had been throttled - accidentally according to the company. Regardless of intent, the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has issued an ultimatum, giving the internet provider until September 27 to find a way to stop throttling gamers.
According to the CRTC, Rogers’ own traffic management policy states that “online games, such as World of Warcraft, should not be throttled or slowed down, and would only be affected if Rogers misclassifies the games and other peer-to-peer applications were running at the same time.”
Rogers claims it has corrected the issue and is ”not aware of any problems with any other online games,” but the CRTC’s demand has some bite, insuring that Canadian gamers don’t get burned by the ISP on bandwidth.
