With 2011 being the 20th anniversary of Sega’s flagship character, Sega is looking to put its best foot forward. ”This year, 2011, is the anniversary, so we’re focusing on the celebration title,” Sonic Team’s Takashi Iikuza told Eurogamer, ”But moving forward to 2012, Sonic will still be going, so I’d hope to provide Episode 2 then.
Sonic Team seems to be treating the term “episodic content” with the same amount of seriousness as Valve. When questioned about having such a long wait between Episode 1 and Episode 2, Iizuka claimed that there was always going to be a break: ”It was always the plan. We knew about the anniversary year, and Generations was planned way in advance. It was always our plan to release Episode 2 after Generations.”
Like Valve’s Half-Life 2 episodes, it seems Episode 3 is in doubt, with Iizuka admitting, ”We can’t say if there’s going to be Episode 3 or not.”
